Moving into a new home is an exciting time, and you’re probably daydreaming about décor, new furniture and recreating your Pinterest boards. But before you get into the fun stuff, there are some basics you should cover first.

Keep in mind, most of these items will need to be done once closing has been completed and you’re in full possession of your home. Your real estate agent should have already advised you to set up utilities in your name, remind you to call your internet provider so those are ready to go when you move in, and other miscellaneous items that can be done before closing. So, once you have the keys in hand, here are some things that should be on the top of your to do list!

4 Things You Should Do Before You Move Into Your New Home

1. Change the locks

Even if you’re promised that new locks have been installed in your home, you can never be too careful.  It’s worth the money to have the peace of mind that comes with knowing that no one else has the keys to your home.  Changing the locks can be a DIY project, or you can call in a locksmith for a little extra money.

2. Steam clean the carpets

It’s good to get a fresh start with your floors before you start making yourself a home.  The previous owners may have had pets, young children, or just never got around to cleaning it themselves.  Take the time to steam clean the carpets so that your floors are free of stains and allergens.  It’s pretty easy and affordable to rent a steam cleaner or you can hire a professional to do it!

3. Deep clean

Whether you want to clean it yourself or hire a professional to do it, a deep clean should definitely be a priority before moving in.  If the previous occupants wanted to skimp on some of their cleaning duties when they moved out, the kitchen and bathroom is where they probably cut corners.

Make sure you wipe down and disinfect the cabinets and drawers (inside and out).  If you’re not putting in new appliances, make sure you clean out the refrigerator, oven, microwave, and even the dishwasher.  You’ll want to get all the little nooks and crannies!  Dust, food and germs can find itself everywhere!

4. Buy new doormats

Out with the old and in with the new!  We suggest buying a new doormats for your new home.  Even if your shoes are clean, you don’t want to wipe your feet on a dirty rug and then track it into your home (especially if you just got your carpets cleaned!)  This is an inexpensive purchase that you’ll want to make, plus it will give your entryway a fresh new look!
Moving day can be fun, stressful and exciting all at the same time!  By planning to do the 4 things above before moving in, you’ll be one step ahead and have peace of mind knowing your home is clean and ready for you to make it your own.  If you have questions or need any recommendations, contact me today!  I’d love to help!
